In a surprising turn of events, Parliament has approved the first in a series of tax waivers that the Finance Committee previously blocked. The approval comes after the removal of MP Kwaku Kwarteng, the former chair of the Finance Committee, who was accused of hindering tax waivers totaling nearly $400 million.
The approved tax waiver amounts to €1.5 million and is designated for the supply and installation of e-learning laboratories in Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country. This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing the quality of education in Ghana by providing modern educational resources to students.
Vice Chair of the Finance Committee, Carlos Ahenkora, defended the need for the tax waivers, emphasizing their importance in supporting educational development. Surprisingly, the Minority did not oppose the approval, with Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, stating that the waiver is not controversial and aligns with previously approved loan facilities for educational projects.
Dr. Ato Forson commended the Minister for evenly distributing the e-learning equipment to secondary schools across the country. This move highlights the government’s commitment to bridging the educational gap and ensuring that all students have access to essential learning tools.
The approval of these tax waivers demonstrates Parliament’s dedication to investing in the future of education in Ghana. It is a positive step towards creating a more conducive learning environment for students and enhancing the country’s overall educational infrastructure.
