Otis Taylor is a blues artist from the United States who was born on July 30, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He can play the guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and sing. He is a multi-instrumentalist. He received a fellowship in 2001 from the Sundance Film Composers Laboratory.

Taylor was born in Chicago and moved to Denver, Colorado, at a young age, where he spent his formative years. Although he had previously been a banjo player, his father had always wanted him to become a jazz musician.

Taylor dropped the banjo and started concentrating only on the guitar and harmonica after learning that the banjo was originally an African instrument that was almost exclusively transformed into a white bluegrass instrument, in part thanks to the offensive black-face minstrel shows of the 19th century.

He played professionally in many blues-focused bands in both Europe and the US up until 1977. Following that, he quit his job in the music business to pursue other interests, like becoming an antique trader.

The greatest blues album of 2002, according to a reviewers’ poll that appeared in Down Beat magazine, was Taylor’s Truth is Not Fiction.
