Oswald Stender, a former Bishop Estate trustee who set the path for reforms to the estate’s operations, died recently.
When the story broke in the 1990s that the board was misusing its power in operating Kamehameha Schools, Stender was one of the five trustees.
Stender was born in Hau’ula in 1931 and attended Kamehameha School for Boys on a scholarship.
Before graduating in 1950, he met his wife, Ku’ulei Sequeira, there.
After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1958, Stender began his career as an assistant property manager at the Estate of James Campbell.
He rose through the ranks to become the CEO, and he also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors.
