Concerns regarding the resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader, have been voiced by Dr. Rasheed Draman, the Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs.
At a meeting of the NPP caucus in parliament and the executive, which included President Akufo-Addo, the Suame MP voluntarily offered to resign, according to Myjoyonline’s sources within the NPP hierarchy.
On JoyNews’ PM Express, however, the political expert made the suggestion that the Suame MP may have been forced to resign from office.
He questioned whether this kind of approach was the most effective in motivating people to commit their lives to public service.
He acknowledged that the party has the right to select its leaders in Parliament, but he also pointed out that national government is a shared duty.
Given that Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is the longest-serving member of parliament and has a lengthy history of public service, Dr. Draman expressed concern over the exit’s circumstances, saying, “I don’t think the end should be a push.”
On Wednesday night, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu formally resigned from his position as the head of the majority caucus in Parliament. Before this, there were many rumors that he may be removed to make room for his deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assume the position.
Many have claimed that his new position as the Chairman of the Manifesto Committee for the NPP’s election 2024 campaign was the reason behind his resignation, which became public after it was announced.
Dr. Draman, however, questioned this line of thinking, pointing out that other MPs successfully manage their twin responsibilities as ministers and members of parliament.
He stated on Wednesday, “So really, we are just witnessing a rerun of the events that we witnessed with the NDC, and Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has now joined his friend Haruna Iddrisu in suffering the same fate.”
