After the Oregon Ducks football team’s loss to the Oregon State Beavers by a score of 34-38 in Corvallis on Saturday, one of the team’s players attacked a spectator in the stands.

An Oregon State supporter wearing a No. 4 jersey and a cowboy hat approached Oregon outside linebacker DJ Johnson as he was exiting the field.

Johnson was a member of the Oregon Ducks. After Oregon State won an unexpected come-from-behind victory, a number of spectators walked out onto the field to celebrate.

The fan was one of those onlookers.

Based on what can be seen in the video, the fan was either waving to Johnson or walking up to him with the intention of shaking his hand.

The fan’s cowboy hat came crashing to the ground after Johnson gave him a hit to the back of the head. Before the situation could become even worse, two coaches removed Johnson from the arena.

The video does not make it obvious whether the fan had said anything that could have prompted Johnson to behave in such a manner.

A person on Twitter with the handle @gusthesportsfan responded to the video by saying, “We all wonder why rushing the field is an issue.”

It is imperative that rushing the field while the opposition team is still there be made illegal and met with severe punishment; otherwise, incidents like these will continue to take place. (This is not to imply that the player or fan was correct.)”

In the fourth quarter, No. 9 Oregon held a lead of 34-17 over No. Isaiah Newell completed a dramatic comeback for No. 22 Oregon State by scoring a touchdown with 8:11 left to play, which ultimately led to the Beavers’ triumph.
