Opal Lee is the eldest of three children born to Mattie and Otis Flake. She was born in Marshall, Texas on October 7 1926 which makes her exactly 95 years old this year.
Lee graduated from the Willey College in Marshall, Texas in 1952 with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She later went on to study at the University of North Texas and received a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling.
She is particularly famous for the roles she played as an activist in the south. Lee and civil rights activist Lenora Rolla co-founded the Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society. She assisted in the planning of Fort Worth’s annual Juneteenth celebration. Lee established an annual bus tour through economically depressed areas for Fort Worth city leaders.
Lee walked from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., at the age of 89. Her efforts were rewarded in 2021 when Congress passed and President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday. She also serves on the board of Transform 1012 N. Main Street.
