Amos Agyei Gyamfi, a senior dietician at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, is urging Ghanaians to practice moderation when it comes to consuming salt.
He recommends that no more than one teaspoon of salt should be consumed in a day to reduce the risk of hypertension.
In a recent interview, Mr. Gyamfi highlighted the importance of managing one’s diet to control blood pressure, emphasizing that excessive salt intake is a leading cause of hypertension. He explained that high salt consumption can result in elevated blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and kidney failure.
According to Mr. Gyamfi, it is crucial for individuals to be mindful of their salt intake, as even small amounts of hidden salt in processed and packaged foods can contribute to high salt consumption without realization. He advised that a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, combined with regular physical activity, can help maintain optimal blood pressure and overall health.
Mr. Gyamfi also cautioned against the westernization of diets in Ghana, noting that local foods are rich in nutrients and more beneficial for health. He believes that by making these dietary changes and adopting a healthier lifestyle, Ghanaians can proactively improve their health and reduce the incidence of hypertension.
The dietician’s advice aligns with global health guidelines, which recommend limiting salt intake to minimize the risk of hypertension and associated health complications. By following his recommendations, Ghanaians can take proactive steps towards better health and well-being.
