The former American footballer OJ Simpson has passed away at the age of 76, according to his family.
OJ Simpson’s full name is Orenthal James Simpson and rose to fame as a college footballer before playing in the NFL.
In 1995, he was acquitted of the murder of his former wife Nicole Brown and a friend in a trial that gripped America.
In 2008, he was sentenced to 33 years’ imprisonment on charges of armed robbery. He was released in 2017.
OJ Simpson died of cancer on Wednesday, April 10, 2004, his family wrote on Twitter/X.
“He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” the statement read.
Born in 1947 and raised in San Francisco, California, Simpson was the son of Eunice Durden, a hospital administrator, and Jimmy Lee Simpson.
His father reportedly worked as an employee of the Federal Reserve Bank and as a one-time bank custodian. His father was a well-known drag queen in the San Francisco Bay Area. Later in life, Jimmy Simpson announced that he was gay. He died of AIDS in 1986.
