Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a vocalist and musician from Pakistan who specialized in the Sufi Islamic devotional music known as Qawwali. He is referred to be “Shahenshah-e-Qawwali” (Kings of Qawwali) in popular culture.

His father encouraged him to pursue a career in medicine or engineering because at the time, being a Qawwali musician did not provide a respectable social rank.
His family has been performing the traditional qawwali song for more than 600 years through successive generations.
After his father’s passing, he shifted to vocal music and received instruction from his paternal uncles Mubarak Ali Khan and Salamat Ali Khan. He had initially begun by learning the Tabla from his father.
After the passing of his uncle Mubarak Ali Khan in 1971, he was chosen to lead the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan & Party, the family’s Qawwali Party.
He made his stage debut as the head of the Qawwali Party during the Jashn-e-Baharan music festival in Islamabad, which was put on by Radio Pakistan.
