Preparing to begin a series of rallies, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) wants to challenge the significant increase in license verification fees, which have gone from GH¢550 to an astounding GH¢3,000.
The GRNMA, led by President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, fiercely opposes this 445.5% fee hike, stressing the onerous effects it will have on its members.
The protests, which are slated to take place from March 22 to April 3, 2024, will begin with a symbolic act of unity as nurses and midwives from various healthcare facilities wear red bands. On March 27, there will be a crucial news conference that comes after this graphic presentation.
Consequently, GRNMA plans to intensify its demonstrations, starting on March 28 and lasting until April 2nd.
As a result of these efforts, on April 3rd, all inpatient and other critical services will come to an end.
GRNMA is frustrated that relevant organizations like the Ghanaian Parliament, the Ministry of Health, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council have not responded to their demands for a revision of the outrageous GH¢3,000.00 fee. They emphasize the urgent need for attention and action.
Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo highlights in a statement the financial difficulties that Ghanaian nurses and midwives have, which are made worse by insufficient pay scales. The group feels that a maximum 25% increase is more doable for midwives and nurses in all grade levels.
