The National Service Scheme (NSS) will not be abolished if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is elected president, according to Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s clarification.

In Accra on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia revealed his plans to make the national service optional in the event that he wins the presidency in the next general elections.

Oppong Nkrumah promised Ghanaian teenagers seeking employment that they will not be rejected jobs because they haven’t done national service.

“NSS will remain; he is not planning to do away with it. He’s saying that if you obtain a job, and you are being denied that position because you haven’t done the necessary national service, he’s going to take that clause out.

“Employers are not required to suggest that you shouldn’t receive the job because you haven’t completed national service if you are offered one and they are prepared to hire you.

“It does not imply that the training, education, and cultural growth have stopped; rather, they have continued. You won’t be denied a job because you haven’t completed national service,” He remarked during Umaru Sanda Amadu’s Face to Face segment on Citi TV.

Dr. Clement Apaak, the ranking member of Parliament’s Education Committee, claims that Bawumia’s plan to make the one-year National Service requirement optional will only foster chances for bribery and corruption.
