In Yendi, Northern Region, police have detained one person and are searching for more for offenses relating to voting during the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries.
According to reports, the incident started when a party supporter accused an Electoral Commission officer of smearing his chosen candidate’s ballots with indelible ink.
Other NPP supporters who had gathered in the area reportedly joined during this altercation and caused pandemonium, stopping the electoral process, according to JoyNews’ Martina Bugri. According to her, vandalism occurred to other houses at the location and all of the ballots have currently been destroyed.
As a result, there was pandemonium, with NPP supporters attacking media staff, damaging ballot papers, and damaging property.
According to the police statement, attempts are underway to identify and prosecute the suspects by the law because it is suspected that they have tampered with election materials. Along with the media people attacks, the EC official was also pummeled.
No one was hurt during the disturbances, according to the Facebook announcement, which also stated that “the police worked together with the military, in line with our established protocols, to restore law, order, and security in the area.”
“We wish to assure the public that all persons behind this unfortunate act shall be arrested and prosecuted by the law,” the police said in a press statement released on Saturday, January 27.
