Eric Kweku Boateng, the dissatisfied New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in Awutu Senya East, has attributed his defeat to money inducements.
Just a few days before the January 27 primary, Mr. Boateng’s bank account was frozen, which prevented him from unseating incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson.
He was unable to compete with his rivals as a result, some of whom he said offered GH₵1000 to each delegate.
Vote buying was a major factor in the outcome, but Mr. Boateng expressed his dissatisfaction and said he was hopeful his competition would help him win.
‘At every branch I went, I was told about concerns with my account, and it was only a day after the primary that I received a message confirming the resolution,’ he said in an interview with Accra FM.
In a total tally of 1,427 ballots, Hawa Koomson, who is also the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, decisively defeated her two opponents, Bernard Dankwa (97 votes) and Eric Boateng (8 votes), with 1,318 votes.
Notwithstanding the difficulties, Mr. Boateng is unwavering in his commitment to help the NPP win the forthcoming elections on December 7.
