The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in Mampong, Ashanti Region, has been rescheduled because 35 party members filed an injunction to prevent it from happening.
The Mampong NPP has been embroiled in legal battles since February 2022, when disgruntled members contested the legitimacy of polling place elections.
Despite the Mampong High Court’s dismissal of the case, the plaintiffs, led by Kofi Sarpong, managed to obtain a fresh injunction at the Court of Appeal against the upcoming parliamentary primaries on January 27.
The party has acknowledged the suspension while they wait for the court’s decision regarding the injunction. Asaase News was informed by a source with knowledge of the development that “the national leadership has also been served and the constituency executives received this fresh document on Tuesday.”
“The national leadership has also been served, and the constituency executives received this fresh document on Tuesday,” a source with knowledge of the development told Asaase News.
This suggests that the election will still be held at a later time. The application will be heard by the Appeal Court next month. The seats that are presently occupied by members of parliament would host the NPP primary. This is the party’s last internal election before the general elections in 2024.
