Norman Lear, an icon, filmed a video for Instagram in his last hours, marveling at the miracles of contemporary technology and how it took him to his 100th year of life.

“My God, the wonder of being alive with everything that we have,” he says after covering a Dean Martin song. “I’ll be 100 years old tomorrow.” Did you hear what I said? I’ll be 100 years old tomorrow. That’s as plausible to me as the fact that I’m 99 years old.”

The five-time Emmy winner is up for a sixth for producing Live In Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff’rent Strokes (with Brent Miller). He is still a busy producer, with discussions of another Live In Front of a Studio Audience (possibly Maude?) and a TBS revival of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

The long-time producer and philanthropist was born in Connecticut on July 27, 1922.

He flew combat missions in WWII before beginning his illustrious career in television, first with variety shows like The Martha Raye Show and The Andy Williams Show before creating such hits as Sanford and Son, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Maude, All in the Family, Good Times, One Day At A Time, and The Jeffersons.
