According to reliable sources, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, one of the country’s most influential postwar leaders, was assassinated Friday in a gun assault while attending a campaign rally in Nara, near Osaka.
He was 67 years old at the time. Abe, a long-time figure in Japanese politics, was premier for a brief while from 2006 to 2007 before returning to the country’s highest political post from 2012 to 2020.
Since its inception in 1955, his center-right Liberal Democratic Party has dominated Japanese politics.
The 67-year-old Japanese has become modern Japan’s longest-serving prime leader by the time he resigned due to illness in August 2020.
His term surpassed that of his grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi, who governed Japan from 1957 to 1960; his father, Shintaro Abe, also served as chief cabinet secretary, which is often regarded as the country’s second-most influential position.
