At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, he won gold medals in the 200 meters and the 4 x 100-meter relay.
Lyles could only achieve a bronze medal in the 200-meter men’s final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on August 4, 2021, with a timing of 19.74 seconds, equaling his season’s best at the USA Olympic Trials earlier that year. On August 21, he followed up his Olympic effort with a 19.52 (+1.5) in Eugene, Oregon, his second-best performance and the ninth fastest 200 m mark in history.
