Deadline has learned that Noah Cowan, a former co-director of the Toronto Film Festival and executive director of SFFILM in San Francisco, passed away on Wednesday 2023 January, in Los Angeles from cancer. He was 55.

Glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer for which Cowan received a diagnosis in December 2021, caused his death.

He joined TIFF in 1984 as a box office employee after assisting with the festival in the summer of 1981. He was born on July 22, 1967, in Hamilton, Ontario.

He later oversaw its print traffic division before contributing to the 1989 Midnight Madness program at TIFF. In 1992, he received a promotion to the program administrator, and in 1997, he co-led Midnight Madness with Colin Geddes.
