The Minister of Railways Development, John Peter Amewu, has assured the public of the safety of all passengers and crew members on board the newly imported train from Poland, following an accident during a test run.

The train, which was recently acquired by Ghana for operation on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, was involved in an accident in the Asuogyaman District on Thursday, April 18, 2024, around 12:10 pm.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Railways Development, the accident occurred when the train encountered a stationary vehicle positioned directly across the rail track as it approached a curve at Km76+100. Fortunately, no passengers or crew members were injured in the incident.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Peter Amewu confirmed that the engineers are currently working on repairing the damaged train. He emphasized that despite the damage to the front of the train, the electrical and engine components are still intact.

Amewu mentioned that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has reported to the police station and investigations are ongoing. The ministry will continue to provide updates to the public as the situation unfolds.

It is expected that the insurance company will expedite the repair process to get the train back on track as soon as possible. The minister expressed optimism that the train will be operational again once the necessary repairs are completed.
