Nico Williams reveals childhood inspiration from Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan

Spanish-Ghanaian winger Nico Williams has opened up about his admiration for Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan, revealing that he looked up to the former Black Stars captain during his formative years.

In an interview with 3 Sports during his recent visit to Ghana, the Athletic Bilbao star shared that Gyan’s goal-scoring prowess served as a source of inspiration for him as a young boy. “When I was young, at six years old, I admired Asamoah Gyan. He was Ghana’s best striker and scored a lot of goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan,” Williams Jr. reminisced.

Asamoah Gyan, who retired from professional football last year at the age of 38, remains Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. He also holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player at the World Cup.

Nico Williams, 22, has been making waves in the footballing world following his Euro 2024 victory with Spain and his Copa del Rey triumph with Athletic Bilbao. The talented winger is currently being linked with a potential move to FC Barcelona during the upcoming summer transfer window.
