Spanish attacker Nico Williams has revealed his childhood hero to be none other than Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan.
The Athletic Bilbao forward, who has Ghanaian roots through his family, shared that he grew up watching the former Black Stars captain in action.
Williams, who is the younger brother of Ghana striker Inaki Williams, had a standout performance at the recently concluded European Championship. He scored a crucial goal and was awarded the Man of the Match in the final against England.
During a visit to Ghana, Williams sat down for an interview with 3 Sports and expressed his admiration for Gyan, saying, “When I was young, around six years old, I liked Asamoah Gyan. He is our best striker. He scored a lot of goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan.”
Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches, also holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player at the World Cup. The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker retired from football last year at the age of 38.
As Williams continues to make strides in his career, his future at Bilbao remains uncertain. However, with his impressive performances at the European Championship, where he helped Spain secure their fourth title, he is well on his way to crafting a legendary career for himself.
