William Nicholas “Nick” Hitchon was a British nuclear fusion scientist and was a professor at the University of Wisconsin until his retirement in June. He was a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, having joined the faculty in 1982. He had earned his Ph.D. in engineering science the previous year from Oxford University.
Hitchon was born in 1956, in Arncliffe, United Kingdom and he was a farmer’s son who grew up in the Yorkshire Dales. He first appeared in the Michael Apted series as a 7-year-old farm boy and was last seen in the 2019 version, 63 Up.

According to reports and the cause of death, it was reported that Hitchon passed away in July after a throat cancer diagnosis that he had revealed in 63 Up, which aired in 2019. Hitchon said then that he was unlikely to live beyond the end of 2020. He died at the age of 65 on July 23, 2023.
