On September 24, 1962, Vardalos was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is the daughter of Greek-Canadian land developer Constantine “Gus” Vardalos, who was born in Kalavryta, Greece, and Doreen Christakos, a bookkeeper and homemaker.

She went to Ryerson University in Toronto after graduating from St. George School and Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg.

She is an actress and writer best known for her roles in I Hate Valentine’s Day, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002. (2009).

She also contributed voices to the 1996 radio adaptation of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi that Brian Daley had written for National Public Radio. She has modest appearances in television shows including The Drew Carey Show and Two Guys and a Girl.

She rose to stardom with her role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a film about a woman’s search for love. Both the critical and financial success of the movie. Vardalos had three nominations for the movie: a Screen Actors Guild nomination, a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy, and an Academy Award nomination for best writing.

A 1994 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actress in a Revue nomination was made for her performance in “Whitewater for Chocolate” at the Second City Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
