An aspirant independent presidential candidate named George Twum-Barima-Adu has started his campaign for the 2024 presidential election.

His goal is to undermine the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s hegemony.

Speaking on January 29, 2024, at the Osu Presbyterian Church Hall in Accra to launch his presidential campaign, he declared that his goal is to seize power and end the duopoly in the best interests of Ghanaians.

His campaign was ushered in with the catchphrases “breaking the 2” and “yee gye aye no yie,” which translates to “we are taking over governance to make it work for everyone.”

He clarified that despite making numerous grandiose promises to Ghanaians to improve their lives, the two major parties had not succeeded in doing so over the previous 32 years.

According to Mr. Twum-Barima-Adu, it was past time for Ghanaians to reject the NPP and NDC’s grasp on the country.

He continued by saying that under the Fourth Republic, all rulers of state served just their followers and personal interests, ignoring the needs of the entire nation.

“We need to break the foothold the NDC and the NPP have had in Ghana. It is now clear than ever that until we break ourselves from the two non-performing conjoined twins, we shall continue to have presidents that serve their parties and supporters and not the totality of Ghanaians,” he said.

The NPP and NDC, he said, were two sides of the same coin that had torn apart the nation to enrich themselves and their families.

In a statement outlining his presidential agenda, he made hints that all state-owned businesses that were not successful would be sold. He also stated that all contracts and public procurement would be examined to ensure value for money and that the government would be trimmed.

“No government entity (including State Owned Enterprises) will enter into a contract without government review, input, and approval,” he clarified, citing the measures his administration will take to prevent this.

He went on to say that he would make sure that no needless public spending was incurred by working within the constitutionally permitted 19 cabinet members, for a total of just 63 ministers.

Regarding the solution to the galamsey problem, he stated that his government would uphold current legislation, enact new legislation when required to close legal loopholes and offer alternative means of subsistence to the young people living in the galamsey and other Ghanaians wishing to pursue careers in fields like carbon credit harvesting and legal hemp cultivation.
