Cruz, 41, is the first full-time designated hitter to join a National League team since MLB’s new labor agreement featured a universal designated hitter.

Cruz will play in his 18th big league season. With the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, the slugger hit.265 with 32 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Cruz will be paid $16 million as mutual option for 2023 and a $3 million buyout.

In 50 postseason games, Cruz has hit 18 home runs.

In their drive for the playoffs, the Rays acquired him from the Minnesota Twins on July 22.
