The writer of the 1986 cult hit “River’s Edge,” Neal Jimenez, a native of the United States and an independent filmmaker, passed away on December 11, according to IndieWire. 62 years old was his age.

Jimenez co-wrote and co-directed the 1992 independent film “The Waterdance” with Michael Steinberg, which was honored with the 1993 Spirit Award for Best First Feature and Best Screenplay.

According to Kathleen Serio, his sister, heart failure was the reason of death. The last ten years of his life were spent with family and friends on a six-acre Arroyo Grande ranch in Central Coast, California, where he was living with paraplegia.

Before making contributions to publications like LA Weekly and California Magazine, Jimenez, a Sacramento native born May 22, 1960, first began writing plays and making Super 8 films at an early age.

He wrote “River’s Edge,” the movie that launched his career, when he was 21 years old and attending UCLA’s film school. The coming-of-age thriller, which starred Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, and Dennis Hopper, is today hailed as an 80s cult classic.
