Namibian police are currently on a manhunt for 11 prisoners who managed to break out of a police cell in the northeastern Zambezi region.
These escapees, who were awaiting trial for serious offenses, were able to cut through the roof of the Katima Mulilo police station in order to make their getaway. It was discovered that items such as blades and makeshift ropes were used to aid in their escape, and these were found in the cell after the fact.
Local residents are being cautioned as some of the escapees are considered to be dangerous individuals, with one having a history of murder. While three of the escapees have since been recaptured, the search continues for the remaining fugitives. The cell, which was originally meant to hold 16 people, was found to be overcrowded with over 100 prisoners awaiting trial. As a result, the cell is currently under renovation.
Residents in the area are being urged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities in order to assist in the search for these escaped prisoners.
