Contrary to rumors, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has denied that junior high school (JHS) leavers are tested in eight required subjects.
According to reports, students who graduate from high school will need to complete eight required subjects as part of the Common Core Programme (CCP) curriculum and the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which is set for July 2024.
“There have been widespread rumors that JHS leavers would be tested on eight (8) compulsory subjects (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Language, Creative Arts, Computing, Career Technology, and RME),” NaCCA clarified in a statement.
Furthermore, students were allegedly offered the option to choose one more elective (Arabic, French, or Ghanaian language). NaCCA wishes to be very clear that this kind of information is false.
Moreover, claims concerning elective courses in the CCP Curriculum were refuted by NaCCA.
“It’s essential to emphasize that there are no optional subjects within the CCP Curriculum. Regarding Ghanaian language courses, educational institutions are required to select any language that best suits their students’ abilities. During the BECE, students will be assessed in these languages. This policy remains unchanged. Consequently, it is false to suggest that the CCP will be adding optional subjects for the BECE.”
However, it was noted that, for reliable information, NaCCA advised educators, parents, and students to consult government websites and social media accounts, as well as the Ministry of Education.
“For exact and current information regarding the CCP and other educational policies, we encourage parents, teachers, students, and the public to seek information from official sources such as the Ministry of Education or our website and social media channels.”
