Muriel Elizabeth Bowser (born August 2, 1972) is the mayor of the District of Columbia, a position she has held since 2015. She formerly served as a member of the District of Columbia Council’s 4th ward as a member of the Democratic Party from 2007 until 2015. She is the District of Columbia’s second female mayor, following Sharon Pratt, and the first woman to be re-elected.
Bowser was elected to the Advisory Neighbourhood Commission in 2004 and to the City Council in a special election in 2007 to replace Adrian Fenty, who had been elected mayor. She was re-elected in 2008 and 2012, and she stood for mayor in 2014.
