George Yankyera, the Kwawu West Municipality’s Municipal Education Director, has paid visits to the families of the children who perished in the recent school bus tragedy at Nkawkaw Nankyea in the Eastern Region.
He offered the bereaved family assistance and his sincere condolences throughout these trips.
Mr. Yankyera visited the hospitalized people and the school affected by the disaster in addition to expressing his condolences.
Notably, the bus was in bad shape and the Education Directorate had earlier recommended that the school replace it.
Regretfully, the disastrous event resulted from this advise not being followed.
A Nissan Patrol, purportedly owned by Prince Karikari, the District Chief Executive of Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti region, was involved in the collision.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle attempted an illegal U-turn while traveling on the road’s shoulders from the Accra to Kumasi direction close to Nanchia.
Sadly, all of the victims including a female instructor known as Dorcas Dede passed away from their wounds while getting care at the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw.
About twenty-three students from Ampeah Memorial School, together with their instructors and driver, were on their way home from school when the tragedy happened at around 3:30 p.m.
Concerned that the earlier warning on the school bus was disregarded, Mr. Yankyera underlined the importance of following safety guidelines.
The circumstances behind the collision are still being looked into.
