MTN and Huawei launch joint technology innovation lab to drive africa’s digital transformation

MTN Group and Huawei have officially opened the doors to their new Technology Innovation Lab at the MTN Group headquarters.

This collaboration, which was announced during MWC 2024, aims to deepen their partnership and accelerate digital transformation and sustainable development across Africa.

The launch event showcased the lab’s focus on crucial areas such as 5G and 5G-A technologies, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, FTTH, automation, and digital financial services. Through research and development in these areas, MTN and Huawei are setting the stage for Africa’s digital future.

The Technology Innovation Lab is more than just a tech hub; it’s a platform for collaboration and innovation. Ralph Mupita, President and CEO of MTN Group, emphasized the lab’s commitment to developing solutions tailored for the African context. He highlighted the role of the lab in driving the growth of the digital economy and empowering communities across the continent.

Mazen Mroué, Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN Group, emphasized the lab’s role as a space for collaboration and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. He stressed the importance of leveraging Africa’s collective brilliance to create solutions that will transform lives.

The President of Huawei’s Wireless Solutions, Cao Ming, expressed his belief that the lab will accelerate Africa’s digital economy and contribute to a more prosperous and sustainable continent. The lab will serve as a hub for experimentation, demonstration, and skill-building, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support cutting-edge research and development initiatives.
