Nigerian students are choosing not to pursue their undergraduate degrees in the UK, per a recent study.
Official records reveal that the number of Nigerian candidates to study in the UK for graduate and postgraduate degrees has decreased by an amazing 46% during the examined period, more than any other country.
According to the UK Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS), the devaluation of the naira and the restrictions on their ability to enter the UK with dependents or close family members because of visa requirements are believed to be the main causes of the decline in applications from Nigerian students.
As of September 2023, Nigerian students had the most number of dependents brought in by overseas students, per the report.
Nigeria experienced the largest decline in applications of any nation, with a total of 1,590 applications, a 46% decrease.
Data on undergraduate student applicants for the 2024–25 academic year from the UK Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS) shows a 1% drop in UK applications over the prior year.
Still, the total number of applications is significantly greater than it was before the outbreak.
