Barbaro was born in San Francisco on June 18, 1990. She grew up in Mill Valley, California, and attended Tamalpais High School before graduating in 2007.
When she was a child, her parents divorced. Barbaro began dancing at a young age and went on to study ballet. She earned a degree in dance at New York City’s Tisch School of the Arts while taking acting electives. She returned to San Francisco after graduating in 2010 to pursue acting. She studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.
Barbaro rose to prominence in 2013 as the lead in It’s Not About the Nail, a viral comedy short about marriage communication. Her first major television role was as Yael in the second season of the Lifetime television series UnREAL. Following UnREAL, Barbaro landed a role as Anna Valdez in the NBC legal drama Chicago Justice, an installment in Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise. In 2018, Barbaro co-starred with Josh Groban and Tony Danza in Netflix’s The Good Cop as Cora Vasquez.
Between 2018 and 2019, Barbaro appeared in the ABC sitcom Splitting Up Together on a regular basis. Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, a naval aviator, was portrayed by Barbaro in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. Though her acting career has taken precedence, Barbaro revealed that dancing is making a comeback in her life. “I’m bringing it all back because I realized I’m not getting any younger, and if there’s ever a time to break out my dancing, it should be now.” In addition to a dance scene in At Midnight, which is set to be released in late 2022, she claims to be working on a film with dancing as a central plot point.
