Christian Atsu, who perished in the catastrophic earthquakes that struck southern Turkey earlier this month, was honoured with Mohammed Kudus’ free-kick goal for Ajax versus Sparta Rotterdam.
In a Dutch Eredivisie 22nd-week game at Amsterdam ArenA versus Sparta Rotterdam, Kudus scored his team’s fourth goal.
The 22-year-old midfielder revealed a shirt hidden underneath his jersey with the words “R.I.P. Atsu” as he celebrated his goal after scoring.
With a 4-0 victory, Ajax maintained the second position with 46 points in the Dutch first-division rankings.
On Twitter earlier on Sunday, Kudus posted: “We belong to Allah, and we will undoubtedly return to Him, according to the proverb Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. My condolences to @ChristianAtsu20’s immediate and extended family. Still in amazement and at a loss for words. May the light lead your brother’s noble and compassionate heart till we next meet.”
In remembrance of Christian Atsu, who was discovered dead beneath the debris of a building in Turkey’s southern Hatay region following the twin earthquakes on February 6, Premier League teams have also held a minute of silence.
