A 26-year-old mobile money sales boy, Richard Okai, is currently facing accusations of stealing a whopping GH¢ 1,385,910.3.
This case has landed in an Adentan Circuit Court, but proceedings are on hold as the court awaits direction from the Attorney General (AG).
Initially appearing in court on March 7, 2024, Okai pleaded not guilty to six charges of theft involving various amounts. The case, presided over by Judge Angela Attachie, saw the accused facing charges ranging from GH¢ 94, 596.30 to GH¢ 460, 983.
In a subsequent hearing on April 23, 2024, before a relief judge named Nana Aba Quaiba Nunoo, the case was adjourned to April 29, 2024, to await guidance from the AG.
According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the complainant, who owns a cosmetic shop called Lilyna Enterprise in Madina Market, noticed suspicious behavior from Okai, who worked as a salesboy responsible for mobile money transactions. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Okai had transferred funds from the company’s account to his personal mobile money account.
Further scrutiny revealed that Okai had been embezzling funds for a significant period, amounting to GH¢ 709,903.6. He had even used some of the stolen money to purchase land and engage in gambling activities.
Following his arrest and admission to the crime during questioning, Okai was charged with theft and appeared before the court for legal proceedings.
