Sheynnis Palacios made history by becoming the first Nicaraguan woman to be crowned Miss Universe at the 2023 annual beauty pageant in San Salvador, El Salvador.

The prestigious event witnessed Anntonia Porsild of Thailand securing the first runner-up position.

Palacios, a previous contestant in the 2017 Teen Miss Universe and the 2021 Miss World pageants, achieved a remarkable feat for Nicaragua.

The competition featured 84 contestants, with a panel of judges including model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and former Miss Universe winners Janelle Commissiong and Iris Mittenaere.

Palacios, who demonstrated elegance in the evening gown round, impressed during the Q&A segment, choosing 18th-century philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft as someone she would spend a day in the life of.

Palacios’ victory marked a momentous occasion for Nicaragua, celebrating diversity and achievement in the international beauty arena.

She is expected to tour around the world with her crown and showcase Nicaragua in a better light.
