The E-levy, emissions tax, and betting tax are to be repealed, according to a private member’s bill that the minority in parliament proposes to introduce.
This is in reaction to a recent suggestion made by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.
In the 2024 polls, Dr. Bawumia promised to abolish these taxes if elected president.
The Minority is taking legislative action in response to the controversial nature of the emissions tax, betting tax, and e-levy.
The purpose of their measure is to force the government to reevaluate these fees, which are considered annoyance charges.
In his final remarks following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized the significant hardship these taxes have on the nation’s enterprises.
Dr. Forson voiced hope that this bill would receive support from the Majority side of the House, which had supported Dr. Bawumia’s position regarding the removal of the E-levy.
He emphasized the dire state of the unemployment rate and the rising expense of living, which is made worse by inflation in food prices and depreciating currency.
Ghana was included as one of the top five countries with the highest food inflation in a recent World Bank study on food security, underscoring the hardships faced by many people who cannot afford basic needs.
