Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 hit “Lovin’ You” and her four-octave D3 to F7 coloratura soprano range. She is particularly well-known for her usage of the whistle register, and she has been dubbed the “Queen of the Whistle Register” by the media.
Riperton grew up on Chicago’s South Side in the Bronzeville neighborhood, where he was born in 1947. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Abraham Lincoln Center. In her adolescence, she sung lead vocals for the Chicago-based female group the Gems. Her early association with the Chicago-based Chess Records gave her the opportunity to sing backup vocals for famous singers such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul ensemble Rotary Connection from 1967 to 1971 while at Chess.
With her No. 1 song “Lovin’ You” on April 5, 1975, Riperton achieved the pinnacle of her career. The single was the final release from her 1974 gold album Perfect Angel. Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 1976 and underwent a major mastectomy in April. The cancer had spread by the time she was diagnosed, and she was given six months to live. Despite the diagnosis, she continued to record and tour.

Riperton had two children. They were Maya Rudolph and Marc Rudolph.
Maya Rudolph is an actress, comedian, and singer from the United States. She joined the cast of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in 2000, and she later appeared in the films 50 First Dates, A Prairie Home Companion, and Idiocracy.
Marc Rudolph is also a sound engineer.
