Military Officer Alfred M. Gray Jr. dies at 95

Alfred Mason Gray Jr., a well known retired United States Marine Corps four-star general born on June 22, 1928 suddenly passed away on March 20, 2024 at the age of 95.

Gray passed away at 12:57 a.m. in his Alexandria, Virginia, home from health issues while receiving hospice care, according to retired Lt. Gen. George Flynn, who also acts as his power of attorney.

After 41 years in the military, Gray served as commandant from 1987 until his retirement in 1991. Both in and out of uniform, Marines adored him during his service and after he retired.

Gray, the son of Emily and Alfred Mason Gray, was born in Rahway, New Jersey, on June 22, 1928. From July 1, 1987, until his retirement on June 30, 1991, Gray held the rank of 29th Commandant in the Marine Corps, culminating 41 years of service.

Alfred Mason Gray Jr. married the former Jan Goss of Burlington, Vermont on July 20, 1980. Jan Goss met her death in 2020 due to an illness.
