Former Soviet leader Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was a Russian politician.
He served as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s general secretary from 1985 to 1991, making him the eighth and final leader of the Soviet Union.

In addition to serving as the Supreme Soviet’s chairman from 1988 to 1989, the Supreme Soviet’s chairman from 1989 to 1990, and the Soviet Union’s president from 1990 to 1991, he was also the nation’s head of state from 1988 until 1991.

Gorbachev initially supported Marxism-Leninism, but by the early 1990s, he had shifted to social democracy.

Gorbachev was born in the impoverished peasant family of Russian and Ukrainian descent in Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai.

He married Raisa Titarenko, a fellow student at Moscow State University, in 1953, and graduated from law school in 1955.

He relocated to Stavropol and began working for the Komsomol youth group. After Stalin’s death, he firmly supported Nikita Khrushchev’s de-Stalinization efforts.

A classmate named Raisa Titarenko was introduced to Gorbachev. She had been engaged to another man, but after they called off their wedding, she began meeting Gorbachev. 1953 saw their wedding.

The couple’s daughter was Irina Mikhailovna Virganskaya in later years. In 1999, Titarenko passed died from leukemia.
