An offensive midfielder or winger for Premier League side Newcastle United and the Paraguayan national team, Miguel ngel Almirón Rejala was born in Paraguay on February 10, 1994.
Almirón was raised in a low-income household in Asunción’s San Pablo district where his mother Sonia worked in a grocery store and his father Ruben put in 18-hour security stints. Although he went through trials with other teams and began training with Club 3 de Noviembre at the age of seven, his instructors felt that he was “too fragile” to play professional football. He had to share a bed with his mother until he was eighteen because his family of seven needed three bedrooms to accommodate everyone.
Almirón came to Cerro Porteo after being rejected by Club Nacional for being too light. His new club was still skeptical of his physique, and he didn’t play frequently until he was on their under-17 team. Almirón joined Club Atlético Lans in Argentina’s Primera División in August 2015. After being introduced gradually by Lans manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto in his debut season, Almirón burst into the scene the following season in the truncated 2016 Argentine Primera División under Jorge Almirón. As an advanced center midfielder, Almirón was instrumental in Lans’ 2016 Argentine Primera División title success, scoring crucial goals against local rivals Banfield in the Clásico del Sur and later against San Lorenzo in the final. In August 2016, Almirón set up the only goal in Lans’ Copa Bicentenario triumph over Racing.
