American singer-songwriter and musician Michael Stipe was born on January 4, 1960. The fact that he was the lead singer and lyricist for the alternative rock band R.E.M. makes him most famous.

He has a following thanks to his unique theatrical appearance, original words, and vocal range.

Stipe is renowned for both his peculiar voice and his early career’s “mumbling” style. In the middle of the 1980s, Stipe started employing “wailing, keening, arching vocal rhythms,” which R.E.M. author David Buckley compared to Celtic folk musicians and Muslim muezzins.

He was in charge of R.E.M.’s visual aspect, frequently selecting album art and directing several of the band’s music videos. Outside the music industry, he owns and oversees the film production companies C-00 and Single Cell Pictures.
