American actress Charlene “Michael” Hyatt was born in Britain.
Vera Hyatt, an art historian, museologist, and former deputy director of the National Gallery of Jamaica, and Charles Hyatt, an actor, broadcaster, and comedian, were his Jamaican-born parents, and Hyatt was born in Birmingham, West Midlands.
Hyatt was introduced to theater and art as a young child in Jamaica throughout the 1970s thanks to both of her parents’ careers in those fields. When Hyatt was ten years old, she and her mother, together with her two siblings, moved to the US. Before moving to Washington, D.C., the family lived in Maryland.
Hyatt graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Howard University. She worked at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. while in college and completed a practicum in the theater. During her time in Grad school, she worked as Spike Lee’s assistant

She appeared on stages all around the United States before her work in film and television, particularly in Ragtime on Broadway. She portrayed Dr. Noelle Akopian on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Brianna Barksdale on The Wire, and Detective Sheila Muncie on Ray Donovan.
In the 2009 Los Angeles performance of the Danai Gurira drama Eclipsed, she portrayed Rita.
The first four seasons of the HBO series The Wire featured Hyatt as Brianna Barksdale in recurrent episodes. She played Connie Reubens, the SWAT team leader, in the Spike TV series The Kill Point. She has appeared as a guest star on both Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The West Wing by Aaron Sorkin. Along with these shows, she has had brief cameos on ER, 24, Law & Order, Six Feet Under, The Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars, Oz, Criminal Minds, Joan of Arcadia, Dexter, and Glee.
She also had a featured role in the 2014 film Nightcrawler. Hyatt currently plays Cissy Saint, mother of drug dealer Franklin Saint in the FX series Snowfall.
