Jacob deGrom’s comeback has been delayed at least slightly just before he was about to join the Mets again.
The Mets announced on Tuesday, the same day that deGrom was initially slated to throw a simulated game that might have been the last phase of his rehab assignment, that the right-hander had “moderate muscular pain around his shoulder.”
Instead, the practice match has been postponed until Thursday “out of an excess of caution,” the team said.
DeGrom played catch “without incident” on Monday and Tuesday, according to the team.
The following start for DeGrom was scheduled for Tuesday.
All levels of the organization were scheduled to participate in a practice game in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and if all had gone according to plan, he might have made his season debut Sunday against the Padres or next Tuesday against the Yankees.
However, the Mets, who have handled deGrom’s comeback with care and patience, chose to play it safe once more.
