The Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) recently embarked on a significant trip to Ghana, where they visited the Ghana Bar Association and the Attorney General’s Office. The visit was filled with warm greetings, mutual support, and traditional “Akwaabas” from their Ghanaian hosts.

Founded in 1987 through the merger of the Harlem Lawyers Association and the Bedford Stuyvesant Lawyers Association, the MBBA has been a vital advocate for minority communities in the New York metropolitan area. As part of their 40th-anniversary celebrations, the MBBA made the journey to Ghana to celebrate their heritage and reconnect with their roots.

During their visit, MBBA Director Tanya Blocker emphasized the importance of strengthening bonds among legal professionals on both sides of the Atlantic. MBBA President Carl Forbes, Jr. highlighted the historical connections between New York City and Ghana, citing figures like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Deputy Attorney General Diana Asonaba Dapaah, who studied in New York.

The Ghana Bar Association welcomed the MBBA delegation, proposing a collaborative relationship aimed at mutual development within the legal profession. Deputy Attorney General Madam Diana Asonaba Dapaah stressed the importance of greater female representation in the legal field and suggested merging efforts with the MBBA to share insights and strategies.

Both organizations committed to further collaboration and outlined a clear action plan to build stronger, more structured links between the Ghana Bar Association and the MBBA in New York. The visit concluded with a shared vision of partnership and mutual growth within the legal profession.
