American actress Melissa Leo, full name Melissa Chessington Leo, was born in New York City on September 14, 1960. She is well recognized for her realistic portrayals of tough, steely women dealing with challenging circumstances.
Leo made her acting debut in 1984, and for All My Children, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Newcomer/Woman in a Drama Series at the 12th Daytime Emmy Awards. After that, Leo made additional movie appearances, including those in Streetwalkin’, A Time of Destiny, Last Summer in the Hamptons, and Venice/Venice. She also had several appearances on television, most notably from 1993 to 1997 in the role of Detective Sgt. Kay Howard on the drama series Homicide: Life on the Street.

She is the daughter of Arnold Leo III, a former spokesperson for the East Hampton Baymen’s Association and an editor at Grove Press, and Margaret, a teacher from California. Leo had supporting appearances throughout the 2000s, including in the independent films American Gun and Hide & Seek, both of which were released in 2005, and a small part in the comedy Mr. Woodcock.
