American singer-songwriter-musician-guitarist Melissa Lou Etheridge was born on May 29, 1961. The 1988 publication of her self-titled debut album led to its success on the indie music scene. Etheridge received her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female in 1989, and the album’s lead track, “Bring Me Some Water,” reached a high position of No. 22 on the Billboard 200.

She received two further Grammy nominations for her second album, Brave and Crazy, which was released in the same year. Ain’t It Heavy, the album’s main track, gave Etheridge her first Grammy Award when she released her third album, Never Enough, in 1992.

Etheridge was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, the younger of two daughters of computer consultant Elizabeth (Williamson) and John Etheridge, a Leavenworth High School American Constitution teacher. August 1991 saw the passing of John Etheridge.

Etheridge took up the guitar at age eight. She began playing in local country music bands when she was a teenager and received her high school diploma in 1979.

Etheridge performed at Boston clubs while she was a student at Berklee College of Music. After three semesters, Etheridge decided to drop out of Berklee and come to Los Angeles to seek a career in music.
