Kamala Harris made history when she was inaugurated as the first female vice president of the United States on January 20, 2021.
While she does not have children of her own, Harris has a close relationship with her husband Douglas Emhoff’s two children, Cole and Ella.
Douglas Emhoff, who was previously married to Kerstin Emhoff for 25 years, is a California attorney and partner at the firm DLA Piper. He currently splits his time between Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Emhoff and Harris met in 2014 when they were set up on a blind date by a friend. They tied the knot at a Santa Barbara courthouse in August 2014.
Cole Emhoff, one of Douglas Emhoff’s children, graduated from Colorado College with a degree in psychology. He currently works for production company Plan B Entertainment, which was founded by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Ella Emhoff, named after the musical icon Ella Fitzgerald, is a graduate of Parsons School of Design. She is a successful knitwear designer who has worked with major fashion brands and even walked the Met Gala carpet hand-in-hand with actress Julia Garner. Ella accepts commissions for her pieces through Instagram and her website.
Despite not having children together, Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff have a strong family bond that extends to Emhoff’s children from his previous marriage. Harris celebrated the historic milestone of becoming the first female vice president of the US with her family by her side.
