Henry Dargan McMaster of Columbia became the 117th Governor of South Carolina on January 24, 2017, and was elected to his first full term on November 6, 2018.
The son of former state representative John Gregg McMaster and Ida Dargan McMaster, Governor McMaster is a lifelong servant of the State of South Carolina. He previously served two years as lieutenant governor, eight years as attorney general, and four years as a United States attorney.

The Governor and First Lady have two children, Henry Dargan McMaster, Jr., who married Virginia Roach in August of 2018. In addition, Henry D. McMaster, Jr. and Mary Rogers McMaster. They are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia.
The governor was central to the fight against Obamacare, organizing and leading a group of attorneys general that challenged the law’s unconstitutional federal encroachment.
In 2003, McMaster issued a landmark opinion to protect our marsh islands from encroachment and later won the Life Sciences Act case in the South Carolina Supreme Court, which enhanced the state’s economic potential through its universities for research, development, and investment in the knowledge-based economy.
