Gretchen Esther Whitmer (born August 23, 1971) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as Michigan’s 49th governor since 2019. She was a Democrat who served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006, as well as the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Whitmer was born in Michigan and raised there. She attended Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan State University, and the Michigan State University College of Law, which was known as the Detroit College of Law at the time.
She ran for the Louisiana House of Representatives unsuccessfully in the 1990s before being elected in 2000. She was elected as a state senator in 2006, a position she held until term restrictions forced her to resign in 2015.

Governor Whitmer and her husband, Marc Mallory, live in Lansing with Kevin and Doug, Michigan’s First Dogs. Her daughters, Sherry and Sydney, are both University of Michigan students.
Her three stepsons, Alex, Mason, and Winston, are all Michigan residents. Governor Whitmer graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree and a law degree. Gretchen Whitmer, a longtime Michigander, is honored to serve as Governor of Michigan.
She will continue to work to guarantee that every Michigander receives a high-quality public education and a path to a good-paying career, that every town has clean, safe drinking water, and that everyone can safely drive to work or drop their children off at school without blowing a tire or cracking a windscreen.
